FGCU Great Lawn, Florida Gulf Coast University, Estero, FL
As part of a masterplan developed for FGCU, a plan was developed for the Great Lawn, a central walking hub and gathering space for students at the University. Envisioned as the heart of the University, a scheme was developed that mimicked an EKG monitor. The long plank pavers were changed in their orientation to be parallel to the path of travel, and the edges were softened and broken down as though they were dissolving into the landscape. The main circulation spine goes through the great lawn, and the changing widths of the spine are reflected in the modulating pathway along the spine through the campus. Large concrete cylinders were then placed that could be used in a variety of ways by the students – the idea was to provide a general form that they could adapt to their needs at the moment. This was a fun project developed win concert with the landscape architects at Waldrop Engineering, and it is a departure from the simple single-width pathways typically seen in these settings.
